The Color Purple was a novel that enriched me in such a way that it expanded my view on diverse cultures. The Color Purple was written by a young black girl who was uneducated and not sure of what was outside the world now a days.
Celie says, "Well, us talk and talk about God, but I’m still adrift. Trying to chase that old white man out of my head. I been so busy thinking bout him I never truly notice nothing God make. Not a blade of corn (how it do that?) not the color purple (where it come from?)"
Celie refers to men as 'white' men which indicates a difference in what we see since I do not call men 'white'. This helps me see through the eyes of a young, minority since she does not see herself as equal as the white man.
Another line, Celie says "Mr. ______ think all this is stuff men do. But Harpo not like this, I tell him. You not like this. What Shug got is womanly it seem like to me. Specially since she and Sofia the ones got it."
Celie can not even call the master "Mr. _______ by name because she he is her master and she has to work for him. This helps me see through her eyes because I do not have a master and I am equal enough to call men by their last names and not have to leave a blank.
The Color Purple helped me see through the eyes of a young, black girl who is a minority.
