When I was younger, one of my favorite stories to have read to me over and over was the infamous, Tell The Truth Tyler by JoDee McConnaughhay. The book, as given from the title, taught me to always tell the truth and if I do not, I will run into consequences.
In the book, the dad confronts Tyler,
"'Why didn't you tell me the truth?' Dad asked, gently wiping the chocolate from Tyler's nose.
'I was afraid to,' Tyler said."
I learned that when you do not tell the truth, you will get confronted.
Another part in the book, the dad tells Tyler why the truth is always important.
"'You know,' Dad said, 'it's not always easy to tell the truth. But God says it's the right thing to do. The Bible says 'Stop telling lies. Tell each other the truth. ' Even if it's hard to do, speak up and tell the truth."
In this part of the book, the dad teaches Tyler that no matter what, lies are worse than the truth. The truth is valued and you should always tell the truth because God says it's the right thing to do.
Stories teach us the consequences of our actions and I learned from Tell the Truth Tyler to always tell the truth. With the truth, we will never run into unwanted consequences.

Stories help us see through the eyes of others
The Color Purple was a novel that enriched me in such a way that it expanded my view on diverse cultures. The Color Purple was written by a young black girl who was uneducated and not sure of what was outside the world now a days.
Celie says, "Well, us talk and talk about God, but I’m still adrift. Trying to chase that old white man out of my head. I been so busy thinking bout him I never truly notice nothing God make. Not a blade of corn (how it do that?) not the color purple (where it come from?)"
Celie refers to men as 'white' men which indicates a difference in what we see since I do not call men 'white'. This helps me see through the eyes of a young, minority since she does not see herself as equal as the white man.
Another line, Celie says "Mr. ______ think all this is stuff men do. But Harpo not like this, I tell him. You not like this. What Shug got is womanly it seem like to me. Specially since she and Sofia the ones got it."
Celie can not even call the master "Mr. _______ by name because she he is her master and she has to work for him. This helps me see through her eyes because I do not have a master and I am equal enough to call men by their last names and not have to leave a blank.
The Color Purple helped me see through the eyes of a young, black girl who is a minority.

Stories Create Community
Stories connect people through different ways. One such way is community. In my life, Dr. Seuss' books have really brought a community together. From far and wide including all ages, Dr. Seuss, such as Cat in the Hat, reaches a vast majority of people. It has even been created a movie it's been popular.
One line in cat in the hat that is known by many,
"Look at me!
Look at me!
Look at me NOW!
It is fun to have fun
But you have to know how"
One line in cat in the hat that is known by many,
"Look at me!
Look at me!
Look at me NOW!
It is fun to have fun
But you have to know how"
This line brings people together since a lot of people know this line in the book. Another well known line in the movie is when the cat says, "Oh yeah!" since he says it repeatedly. Stories like Cat in the Hat bring communities together since it's a well known story that most people can enjoy or relate to since there's not much controversy within the movie.
